Truro and Falmouth's Member of Parliament Cherilyn Mackrory has asked people to respond to the Government's recently launched consultation on more rules around the use of personal watercraft such as jet skis.

Cherilyn said:

"I always receive complaints about inappropriate use of jet skis during the summer months and it is something I regularly speak to colleagues in Government about the need for tighter regulation to stop rogue users being a danger to others using our coastal waters."

"Combined with a recent report from Cornwall Wildlife Trust that disturbances of marine wildlife by these craft have more than tripled in the past six years, and I am pleased that the Government is now looking at what can be done to better regulate their use."

"I encourage Truro and Falmouth residents to respond to the consultation, which closes on 1 November, and share your views."

The consultation will bring recreational and personal watercraft, such as jet-skis and speedboats, under the same laws as those who operate ships, meaning tougher sentences for those caught driving dangerously.

Bringing recreational and personal watercraft in line with laws in place for boats will ensure tougher sentences for reckless driving across all waters.

Maritime Minister Robert Courts said:

"The vast majority of jet-skis users, and those operating personal and recreational watercraft, do so safely and responsibly. However, there are those who unfortunately put others in danger."

"Introducing these laws will help prevent accidents from happening, allowing everyone to enjoy our waterways, beaches and coastlines safely and with peace of mind."
