Permission is being sought for a refurbishment of the Falmouth Methodist Church roof.

Recently acquired by Harry James-Mills and Shaun White (the owners of Wesup and Solskinn in Falmouth) the Methodist church on Killigrew Street is due to reopen as a brand new community hub and arts performance space in Falmouth. The venue was part of The Falmouth Cringe over the weekend.

The applicants have bid for listed building consent for proposed refurbishment of roof covering and lead flashings. They state that the building remains at risk of exposure to the elements and there could be permanent damage if allowed to continue.

The application reads: "Upon inspection, some of these slates may be wet to touch and friable, being an indication that the structure of the slate has now diminished to the point where its properties of low water absorption and resistance to frost have been lost. Regardless of any previously attempted repairs, the roof is in poor order in many places and is not performing as expected with evidence of failure and damage from the ingress of water apparent around some of the internal faces of the building."

The work would involve replacing as many existing slates as possible. The existing single leaf roof access hatch access panel located on the north elevation will also be inspected and renewed. Scaffolding will be put up around the property.

The status of the application is "awaiting decision". Click here to see the plans for yourself.
