This week, "enhanced measures" were announced by the government to help reinforce Cornwall Council's efforts to stop the spread of coronavirus.

The enhanced response area package has been granted to help Cornwall Council with support measures for education settings and increased national communications support, clearly outlining the continued risks of covid-19 and the need to take personal action, such as the wearing of face masks and social distancing.

Additionally, Cornwall will have prioritised access to wastewater testing, sequencing, and national contact tracing capacity.

Despite the announcement, councillor for Falmouth Penwerris Jayne Kirkham says she is yet to see any measures introduced.

Speaking on BBC Radio Cornwall on Tuesday 31st, councillor Kirkham commented:

"I heard the news on Friday and I was immediately onto our covid response team. I have been asking very loudly for extra vaccination clinics, for extra testing and help for our businesses.

"We have been putting on walk-in clinics in Falmouth and they have been very successful. We have got the youngest population demographic in Cornwall, I think 350 people got vaccinated at our last clinic which shows they work, and we want more of them.

"We would like help from Cornwall Council to do that again with some of this money from the enhanced response, but we haven't seen any of that yet. I have spoken to our town manager and we are waiting on tenterhooks to see what we can do now and what this funding will actually mean."

On the subject of immediate changes, councillor Kirkham said she would like to see more walk-in vaccination clinics, surge testing, help to get tests out to businesses and clear advice for schools.

Jayne Kirkham added:

"It has been incredibly busy this summer, it has been tricky because we have had a lot of problems with businesses not being able to staff, and opening and shutting. I think we are still at the tail end of the school holidays so it appears to be pretty busy at the moment, slightly quieter than it was at the weekend."
