Falmouth: Free sunflower seeds at Spring flower show in solidarity for Ukraine

Thousands of sunflower seeds will be shared among visitors and exhibitors at the Falmouth Spring Flower Show, March 26th to 27th at the Princess Pavilion.

The sunflower is Ukraine's national flower, and one of the easiest summer flowers to grow by children and adults alike from a window sill pot or in a garden.

The seeds, which come in packets of 75, 30, and 20 seeds will be shared among families, children, and friends at the 112th flower show to which everyone is invited to come along for free, after two years absence because of covid restrictions.

Flower show volunteer Jean Turner says:

"In Ukraine folk imagery the sunflower represents the warmth and power of the sun. It can be found in the yards of village houses and in city parks. It is embroidered onto dresses and household linen.

"Our flower show is held over Mothering Sunday and the first day of our summertime. In a very small way, giving and sharing sunflower seeds, signals hope and solidarity. I would like to see Falmouth ablaze with sunflowers this summer, from the giant ones so loved by children, to single miniatures grown in a pot on window sills.

"The flower is also a magnet for bees, butterflies and other pollinators. Harvested seeds from the grown plants can be used as snacks, and in baking, or the seed heads left to feed birds."

The Flower Show is being organised for the first time by Falmouth Town Council after the longstanding voluntary committee retired in 2019.

With Gyllyndune Gardens and the Princess Pavilion now council run, the organisers want as many people as possible to take part.

Henrietta Boex, added:

"Serial lockdowns over the last two years have provided many of us with opportunities to learn more about gardening. My colleague Jacqui Owen actually ran the tallest sunflower competition in 2021, so building on that, it would be great if everyone felt they could 'have a go' this year.

"It's the taking part that matters, and being together in our historic garden at a free weekend event for all, like the fantastic St Piran's Day that the Pavilion just hosted. It is also a peaceful and sustainable way to demonstrate our solidarity with the plight of Ukraine."

The 118 different classes include 30 daffodil categories, 12 children's classes, floral art, photography, cacti, orchids, camellias, rhododendrons, and magnolias. Photos of the show from 1910 -2019 will be exhibited throughout the weekend.
