HM Coastguard Area 11 Cornwall has issued a warning to surfers in the local area after the high winds and large swells have made conditions challenging.

The coastguard has been tasked to a series of surfer related incidents yesterday and this afternoon.

The incidents have included a broken leg in one incident and a broken hip in another. In a further incident, a surfer became detached from their board in the Newquay area which required the attendance of the coastguard.

HM Coastguard said:

"Large swells, spring high tides and high winds have made conditions challenging for surfers today. Conditions tomorrow are expected to be even more difficult with potential gales with further challenging conditions into next week.

"There is a real concern that lifeboats and rescuers will struggle to launch if people find themselves in trouble.

"Surfers are asked to assess the conditions and make sure they are not surfing in conditions that are beyond their capabilities."

If you see someone at risk near the coast or sea call 999 and ask for the coastguard.
