This afternoon, James Instance, Coastguard Controller at the Falmouth Coastguard Operations Centre discussed the plan for removal of shipping containers that fell into the water on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, eleven shipping containers fell overboard a ship between Land's End and the Isles of Scilly.

Speaking to James Churchfield on BBC Radio Cornwall, James said the "seriousness" of the situation is light at the moment.

He continued:

"On Tuesday afternoon we got a report from a container vessel that they lost eleven containers overboard.

"They are all empty so anybody hoping for goodies to be washing up on the Cornish shoreline I'm going to disappoint you all. We have eleven empty containers which are floating in the traffic separation scheme that we have between Land's End and the Isles of Scilly.

"Obviously these pose quite a significant hazard to navigation so we are putting a broadcast to warn shipping and vessels that these are out there.

"We have also got counter-pollution aircraft which we have deployed to go out and spot the containers so we can get the most accurate positions we can and we are beginning to go in the process to see if we can recover them."
