Falmouth: Citizen scientists wanted for air quality study
A new study exploring air quality in Falmouth and Penryn is set to get underway and participants are wanted.
The project is led by Dr Jo Garrett, a researcher at the European Centre for Environment and Human Health, University of Exeter.
Dr Garrett is working with a team of researchers from the Universities of Exeter, Cardiff, and Edinburgh.
The researchers would like to work with people to understand the air quality in their local area and help them build connections with other interested people in their community.
Participants will be asked to use either a web app or sensor to measure air quality over a few weeks starting in January, answer a few questions in a daily diary, and take part in two discussion groups during the study.
Dr Garrett told Nub News:
"We're interested in measuring air quality at the local level because it can vary quite a lot over space and time. Cornwall is thought of as being relatively clean and unpolluted, but is that the case in one of our busy towns?"
She added:
"We're also interested in the impact of participation in scientific data collection on engagement with environmental issues."
Anyone can take part, you don't need previous experience of science. However, participants will need to be 18 or older and have access to a smartphone with GPS and Bluetooth capabilities.
If you are interested in taking part, or want to find out more, please contact Dr Garrett via ([email protected]).
