A Falmouth based theatre company is raising money to cast a refugee actor
Pipeline Theatre has started a Crowdfunder campaign to raise money to cast an Ethiopian Refugee actor in their latest play.
The company met Yonas, who's name has been changed on request, in the audition process for their new play, 'Drip, Drip, Drip'.
While they were impressed with his acting skills, Pipeline realised after two auditions that Yonas didn't have the needed level of English to cast him in the role he was going for.
The company made the decision to write in a new character that Yonas could play using his own skills and language, without putting him under pressure with a more pivotal role.
He has been in the country a few years now and has had to take the dangerous journey many refugees have had to take to get here.
Yonas is part of a discriminated ethnic minority which led him to flee from Ethiopia.
His main goal now is to become a successful actor.
Nub News Falmouth spoke to Jude Munden, co-owner of Pipeline Theatre, she said:
"We were instantly a fan of him after his audition. We knew we wanted him in.
"He is so passionate and needs a break, we want to give that to him.
"We don't want it to be one of those 'unpaid internship deals', that isn't what we stand for. We want to pay him properly.
"The crowd funder hasn't taken off as much as we had hoped."
The Art Council recently provided money to the play, but as Pipeline submitted their application before they met Yonas, they need to find funds from elsewhere.
The money raised will go towards accommodation costs for rehearsals and the tour, as well as English lessons.
There are thirteen days left to donate to Pipeline Theatre's cause. You can find out more by pressing the button down below.
