If you are looking for something to do this rainy Saturday, Victoria Gillow's exhibition Well Grounded at The Poly is well worth visiting.

Victoria is a Cornish painter based in Falmouth, and Saturday (2nd) is the final day of her exhibition, which you can catch until 5pm.

A collection of two years worth of work, it is a very personal and genuine response to the Cornish coast, where Victoria walks and paints.

Her heritage and connection with the land through working en plein air (outdoor painting) and dwelling for some time in these places are captured in her paintings.

Well Grounded is a response to two distinct parts of her painting practice.

Victoria told Nub News:

"I am grounded in Cornwall, its coast, its history and my history, a very personal attachment to the coast and the land of my fathers.

"My DNA is in the soil, part of this land with generations before me mining, farming and inhabiting this space

"Well Grounded also denotes the ground on which I work, the first colour I choose to paint and how it supports and informs the painting. The history of the paint, as it is layered, also reflects the history of the land and sea.

"Inspired by walking and painting around the Cornish coast, I am interested in paths well-trodden and how the essence of a place is not just in the physical but in the energy, the spirit of a place, time and weather.

"The last 18 months have been very reflective. Now 'Well Grounded' in the sense of who I am and how my paintings are part of me physically connecting with my space."
