Falmouth advance in FA Cup – Cornish football round-up

FA Cup extra preliminary round

Helston Athletic are through to the preliminary round of the Emirates FA Cup after they defeated Western League colleagues Street at The Tannery. Rubin Wilson gave the Blues a half-time lead in Somerset before Rikki Shepherd doubled the advantage less than a minute after the turnaround, with the Cobblers grabbing a consolation late on.

Helston will host Falmouth Town in the next round after Andrew Westgarth's side came back from a goal down to defeat Saltash United 2-1 at Bickland Park. Callum Merrin gave the Ashes a half-time lead before being shown a second yellow card after the break, with James Swan and Alex Wharton securing a comeback win for Town.

Mousehole will welcome Western League rivals Barnstaple Town to Trungle Parc for their replay on Tuesday night after the teams drew 1-1 in north Devon. Tor Swann got the hosts off to an excellent start, only for Tallan Mitchell to level for Jake Ash's men after 35 minutes.

Torpoint Athletic and Millbrook will also have to do it all again on Tuesday evening after the east Cornwall rivals drew 1-1 at The Mill on Saturday. Ryan Richards put the Point in front, with Tylor Love-Holmes levelling for the Brook with 15 minutes to play.

Elsewhere, Liskeard Athletic's journey is over for this year after the sole Cornish Step 6 side in this year's competition suffered a 4-1 loss at home to Shepton Mallet. Dan Jennings gave the Blues a half-time lead, but goals from Aaron Seviour (2), Joe Morgan and Fin Haines after the break sent the Somerset side through.

Truro City got their 2022/23 campaign off to the perfect start as the White Tigers ran out 3-1 winners at newly-promoted Hanwell Town.

Will Dean got Paul Wotton's side up and running after four minutes before Tyler Harvey opened his account for the season shortly before the interval.

Ben Adelsbury nodded in a third to clinch victory for City, depsite a late consolation from Adam Laaref.

Godolphin Atlantic top the SWPL Premier West table after week one of the season after the G, now managed by Harry Pope, put six past Launceston. Coen Briggs and Ben Colquhoun scored two goals apiece, with Jay Davie and Josh Margetts also getting on the scoresheet.

Mullion enjoyed a SWPL debut to remember as the newly-promoted Seagulls triumphed 4-1 at home to Camelford. Josh Wilson-Hone and Phil Cattran put the west Cornwall outfit two goals up before Tyler Cheshire halved the deficit for the Camels, with Wilson-Hone and Harry Roberts wrapping up a fine opening-day win for Rob Carey's side.

Luke Cloke scored a hat-trick as St Blazey kicked-off their campaign with a 3-1 win at home to Penzance, with Silas Sullivan pulling one back for the Magpies, while Owen Rosevear and Tom Guest scored as St Austell won 2-0 at home to Dobwalls.

Goals from Sam Bullen and Dan Hocking cancelled out Ruben Kane's opener as Sticker won 2-1 at Bodmin Town, while Sam Wickins, Sam Mellor and Sam Gerken gave Wadebridge Town a 3-1 victory at home to St Dennis, who had led through Mykey Davies.

Elsewhere, Billy Hopcroft's strike salvaged a point for newly-promoted Bude Town at home to Newquay.

Lee Robinson, Dan Alford, Louis Thomas and Callum Brown scored as Saltash United reserves won 4-3 at Altarnun.

Jak Davies scored a hat-trick as Falmouth Town reserves won 3-0 at reigning champions Illogan RBL, with Chris Dobson (2), Gareth Ireson and Luke Abbott-Smith netting for St Day in their 4-1 victory at Perranporth.

Max Bowden's goal was the difference as Wendron United reserves defeated new boys Mullion reserves, while Dom Hannaford scored both goals as Helston Athletic reserves drew 2-2 at Hayle.
