Today marks the 75th anniversary of the Normandy landings.

Throughout the entirety of June, Trebah Garden is holding an exhibition to celebrate Trebah & Mawnan Smith's involvement in D-Day.

The event remembers the time of June 1944, when thousands of American servicemen embarked from Trebah's Beach and headed to the beaches of Normandy.

The event is completely free as no garden ticket is required, along with free parking for all visitors.

The visitor centre is home to a range of different historically teaching features, including:

  • A locally created scenic model depicting how Trebah Garden looked in 1944
  • Real footage taken by the US Army of Falmouth and Mawnan Smith between 1943 and 1944
  • Recreated radio recordings based on local West Briton articles

The event will also be heading outside the visitor centre and into the garden's from the 7th - 11th June.

The show, named "Operation Overlord", will feature actors that will be recreating the American's time at Trebah - based on the true tales of the local residents who witnessed it.

A spokesperson for Trebah Garden, told Nub News Falmouth:

"Military Day has been part of the Trebah calendar since the garden opened to the public in the early 80s.

"Having researched Trebah's history, Major Tony Hibbert established the event to commemorate the role thousands of Americans who embarked at Trebah beach played in the DDAY landings.

"Each year the Cornwall branch of the paratroop regiment run the event in partnership with Trebah.

"Major Hibbert was parachuted in behind enemy lines during the 1944 assault, giving Trebah another connection to the allied efforts that ended Nazi control in Europe."
