EPIC GIGability: The Falmouth based charitable gig rowing club for military veterans
EPIC GIGability, is a charitable gig rowing club based in Falmouth, dedicated to Service Veterans, run by a team of Tri-Service military veterans.
The club provides a sporting pathway for all service veterans and aims to connect people supporting a healthier, fitter lifestyle and improve veterans' mental health and well-being through what the club calls 'blue water therapy'.
Patron of the club, Col. Edward Bolitho OBE, Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall has supported the development of the club as it evolved from the Epic Row which was the culmination of the Great Big Cornish Gig project, which saw a group of wounded, injured and sick Veterans build a Cornish Pilot Gig and row it to the Isles of Scilly.
Mike Selwood, Club Trustee said: "Cornish Pilot Gig Rowing is a rapidly growing sport and we are delighted that we are now in a position to be able to offer weekly rowing sessions to an expanding group of Veterans. We continue to grow our membership and we would welcome anyone who has served their country in the Armed Forces, as a regular or a reserve, to get in touch."
"The members have worked tirelessly to promote the club, reach out to ex-service personnel, and grow the club membership. We currently have fifty-two members of all age ranges and abilities. It is lovely to see everyone out on the water, it is a really inclusive sport, proving that Every Person Is Capable," Mike added.
EPIC GIGability is financed through fundraising initiatives, sponsorship, grants, and other charitable donations. There is a rowing taster session for ex-military on Sunday 6th November from 9 am – 11 am in Falmouth. Anyone interested in taking part in the taster session, joining the club to row, either competitively or just socially, or wishing to make a charitable donation, should contact: [email protected]
