The Driver and Vehicle Standard Agency has confirmed that driving lessons are set to resume from the 12th of April in England and Wales, with tests expected to resume on the 22nd of April.
In addition, the DVSA will be offering more tests and examiners, including at weekends and on bank holidays, so that learner drivers can catch up.
Car insurance expert at Confused.com Alex Kindred, said:
"The announcement that learners will be able to re-start driving lessons and book tests is another step towards resuming some 'normality'.
"While demand is high for lessons and tests due and many keen to get back in the driving seat, for some, it must be daunting, having spent time away from the wheel.
"Taking a driving test, be it for the first or fifth time is always nerve-wracking, and some learners might have lost confidence during the lockdown period.
"This is why lessons have been planned to resume first. These extra lessons will hopefully give new drivers the boost they need to pass with flying colours."
Coronavirus restrictions have caused widespread disruption for learners - only 2.97 million people in Britain aged 16-25 hold a full driving licence, compared to 3.32 million people in March 2020.
Covid safety measures include that learners and instructors should wear face coverings in lessons and tests, unless there is a good reason for them not to, the DVSA says.
People doing a test in their own car should clean it beforehand, wiping down the dashboard and car controls, and at least one window on each side of the car must be open.
