On Sunday (July 9) morning, emergency services were called out to deal with a fire at a popular cafe on Commercial Road in Penryn.

Although nobody was injured the Cafe On The Quay was completely destroyed by the fire. Debbie who has owned the cafe for over 20 years is said to be devastated.

After attending the fire, Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service said: "At 07:24 Fire Control received the first of multiple 999 calls reporting a fire at a café on Commercial Road, Penryn.

"Two appliances from Falmouth Fire Station were mobilised along with a Wholetime Station Manager from Truro. On arrival crews found the building to be 100% involved in fire.

"Two firefighters in breathing apparatus were committed under rapid deployment to prevent escalation of the incident and stop fire spreading to adjacent buildings.

"On arrival of the second appliance a total of four firefighters were committed using breathing apparatus. In total 2 hose reel jets, 1 safety jet, and 1 covering jet were used. Crews requested assistance from Devon & Cornwall Police and National Grid to help safely resolve the incident.

"The cause is undetermined at this time and a full fire investigation will be carried out by specialist officers tomorrow."

A Crowdfunder has now been created by Debbie's daughter, Shanna, to help raise funds and rebuild the business.

On the fundraising website, Shanna said that the beloved local establishment had fallen victim to an electrical fire.

She then went on to explain that the insurance coverage only extends to replacing the contents, not the building itself. Which is why the family needs help.

However, on a Facebook group where the fundraiser was shared, Shanna said: "After a phone call with insurance my mum has just found out that she is only insured for public liability so not only is the building not covered neither is any of the contents, we are utterly devastated."

The Crowdfunder has a target of £5000 and is hopeful of helping Debbie secure a suitable building and get Café on the Quay up and running as soon as possible.
