Many people in Falmouth and across Cornwall were left stunned by the news over the weekend that the iconic Skinner's Brewery will be entering administration with the hope that a buyer can be found.

In the statement released on social media, Skinner's were wishful that the brewery could remain a part of Cornwall for many years to come as well as celebrating those that have helped the brewery: "We would like to take this opportunity to thank our staff, stockists, suppliers, the 'Skinner's Beer Tribe' and the whole community for so many years of steadfast support. We hope to bring you further updates soon.

"Please be reassured that the Old Ale House is not affected by this and will remain open at all times as it is not owned directly by the brewery," Skinner's also added in their statement.

Back in 2021 when we were gradually exiting lockdown conditions, Skinner's started a crowdfunding campaign to help keep them going until the pubs reopened. The brewery raised concerns on the pitch for their campaign, "brighter times are coming, but things have been touch and go for Skinner's during the pandemic."

It seems like a similar campaign may not be possible now after another difficult period for the much-loved business. Who wanted to go from "surviving to thriving" it now appears that neither of those options may be on the table.

The Grapes Alehouse & Kitchen in Falmouth also shared their reaction to the news: "This is nothing short of a tragedy. When we were starting out nearly 11 years ago, we had a vision of turning The Grapes Inn into The Grapes Alehouse. In order to get all the equipment necessary to sell real ales, you need to convince a brewery to back you and install all the kit at their cost. We were flatly refused by all the major players, who thought our business plan was a non-starter, but Skinner's Brewery embraced us from the first moment and said they'd help us every step of the way."

Not only business but many members of the community shared their sadness in the comments on social media including Christian Wicks-Lightfoot, saying: "Local legend Fred Thomas aka 'Betty' continues his role as Betty Stogs raising money for local charities albeit without the beer that he was an ambassador of. Let's hope a buyer comes forward soon to save Skinners Brewery from complete liquidation"

Fred Thomas aka Betty commented: "One way or another Betty will keep raising that much-needed money for local charities."

Will Keating the Cornish musician and member of The Oggymen also shared his thoughts: "Truly gutted to hear this. Thank you, Steve and the Skinner's family for all the support you have given to Cornish communities throughout Skinner's life. Myself and my family thank you for playing such a hugely positive part in our lives."

It's clear the brewery has been a big part of people's lives in Cornwall, being part of the Cornish identity and supporting their local community with charity work. Hopefully, we can still all be raising a glass of Betty Stogs for many years to come.
