The factory that is connecting the community through art

In a new series, Nub News will be visiting local groups, organisations and charities to sit down to discuss the exciting projects happening around you.

This time, we sat down with people from the vibrant art space, the Fish Factory. The factory moved in 2018 from Falmouth Wharves to Commercial Road in Penryn.

The workspace boasts fifteen working artist's studios, a gallery, a vegan café and event space. The art space has no core funding and relies on volunteers and the support of the community.

The project was founded in 2011 by Rose Hatcher, Nub News caught up with Rose to discuss their upcoming events, she said: "We do lots of events, mostly art events and music, on Friday have Moogie Wonderland, scrabble and dance party from 8pm till late.

"Next week we have got the Radical Music Week which is a seven-day long festival of really strange, experimental and exciting music so you can buy a ticket for the whole week and go to lots and lots of gigs and workshops or you can just come to any of the evening events, there is a really good line-up and it will be really exciting.

"There is going to be some good live music, Jackson Payne an electronic drummer and Graham Dunning, who is another experimental musician."

Alongside the art space, The Fish Factory also runs an International Residency Program when artists can pay to rent a workspace, network with other artists and develop their projects.

Camilla runs the residency program, she said: "We offer residencies for artists from two weeks to a month and so far, we have had people come from America, Japan, Spain and we have people coming from New Zealand and Canada.

"They come here and spend time with us, they put work together and we also have a residency for Cornish people which is at a reduced rate because of how badly paid we are in Cornwall.

"Once a year we do a zine residency, two people who make zines come and they have a free week here."

A really exciting place for an artist to work in, the current work on show is a Brexitfest exhibition, with people able to vote for their favourite piece in a ballot style.

The space is very welcoming and has a strong community feel about it, Rose commented on the importance of community: "Our remit is to be accessible and affordable for the community to be able to access art.

"It is a very valuable resource because anybody can come here, we are very welcoming to all kinds of people and ideas.

"Another big thing for us is just being able to have space for lots of different activities, ideas and facilitating what artists and the community want rather than having a strict idea about what art should be."

The Fish Factory Brexitfest Exhibition runs until the 24th June, with Dialogues from Earth: Photo Exhibition starting on the 27th June and the main calendar event Radical Music Week starting on the 29th of June.
