The local conservation charities working together to keep Cornwall clean
On Saturday, Falmouth Marine Conservation, Plastic Free Falmouth and One Bag Beach Clean showed their support for World Oceans Day by hosting a litter clean up on Swanpool Beach.
The event was threatened to be ruined by the rain, but that didn't dampen the spirits of everyone there who picked up a variety of items including 32 cans, 2 glass bottles and 10 plastic bottles.
Carol Hurst, Beach Clean Coordinator for Plastic Free Falmouth and Falmouth Marine Conservation, told Nub News: "We hold monthly collaborative beach cleans in Falmouth now whether that be inland or in beach areas, last year I came on board as the coordinator to work with all the groups so we would all work together and pull the resources, rather than doing separate things.
"I am a supporter of the Gweek Seal Sanctuary and just knowing that the seals are coming in with netting around them, I think if we can make a difference down here in Cornwall and we save one seal a year, or we save a few birds not eating plastic off the beach then I think it is worth it."
The weight of the items was the least that the group has ever picked up, which is a step in the right direction.
Despite the adverse weather, there was a good turnout at the event, volunteer Elaine Mountford, said: "I just wanted to see what we could do to help the environment, and do our little bit really.
"It is really important we get rid of the plastic, the litter, if we don't do our bit we are all going to suffer. We live here, I feel it is a privilege to live here, it is about time we started giving something back."
Falmouth now holds regular litter picks to help keep the town and its beaches clean. The next scheduled event is the Post Shanty Festival Clean-Up, which will take place on the 17th of June. Find out more information by clicking the button below.
