Bid for new golf driving range in Falmouth

Plans have been presented for a new driving range at Falmouth Pitch & Putt.
A pre-application submitted by Mr and Mrs A Jewell of Pennance Mill Farm, Maenporth Road explores the idea of building a golf driving range accomodating eight bays at the pitch and putt on Swanpool Road, Falmouth.
The area being considered for the proposed development is to the northern boundary of the site, adjacent to Swanpool Road. It is proposed that the driving range unit would face south, providing users with a considerable area to swing.
Full daytime access to the proposed driving range would be provided during the months of October-April whilst the Pitch and Putt is closed for winter. Access to the golf driving range during the summer months would be around the opening times of the Pitch and Putt.
The driving range would be of timber frame construction with timber elevations and a mono-pitch roof, possibly a 'green roof'. The facility would utilise the existing access and parking.
A response to the pre-application was issued yesterday (5th April) by Mark Ball of Cornwall Council.
He said it wasn't possible to support the proposed development at this time due to the absence of a detailed scheme, full surveys, assessments, and supporting information.
However, he commented:
"The provision of a driving range at the existing pitch and putt site would provide a facility for golfers that is currently absent in Falmouth, which would enhance recreational opportunities for both local residents and tourists.
"There would be short-term modest economic benefits derived from the development during the construction phase and ongoing economic benefits from the operational phase of the development. These benefits weigh in favour of the proposed development in the planning balance.
"However, it would be necessary for any planning application to demonstrate that the existing pitch and putt facility, which is designated as public access sports facilities, would not be adversely affected by the proposed development.
"Any planning application would need to demonstrate that there would be no material adverse impacts upon the character of the area or upon the landscape and natural beauty of the AONB."
