After Lockdown: The Brig remaining positive in uncertain times

By Joseph Macey 16th Sep 2021

In our new segment 'After Lockdown', we will be looking into the future with Falmouth businesses to think about how things will be once the pandemic has settled down.

With so much changed already, we have to be aware that there will need to be many more changes in our usual behaviour as restrictions continue to ease.

Your local is expected to be a much different experience when the government deem safe to reopen.

The Brig based on Arwenack Street is a resident favourite with its pirate theme and a huge selection of rums and cocktails.

Ashleigh Morgan, general manager and owner of The Brig spoke to Nub News about how she sees the industry-changing after Coronavirus, she said:

"Sadly, I think the industry will be affected for a really long time yet. Once furlough starts to taper off and we have to rely on people using our services again, it will be a real test for us all to survive.

"I honestly can't see how people will enjoy a meal in a restaurant, or a pint in a pub, with PPE and social distancing in place, but we will all have to adapt to try and accommodate that I guess.

"Takeaway and delivery will definitely be the saviour of our industry for a long time to come, so please, if you can afford it - help us out!"

Ashleigh told us how despite the hard times she is remaining positive and plans are underway for a new look to The Brig:

"It feels like there may be light at the end of the tunnel, what with the government teasing the idea of reopening in July, but again for us, there has been very little information on this available.

"That said, I have definitely been feeling more positive lately as we have finally been able to start work on a new model for The Brig which will allow us to trade again."

Due to the size of The Brig social distancing would be difficult, the bar is in the process of working on safety measures in the eventuality they could open with the following:

  • Running a preorder only takeaway and, delivery service.
  • Everyone will be allocated a collection time and there will be a 'one in, one out' policy.
  • "The mother" of all deep cleans before the reopening and ensuring all contact surfaces are regularly disinfected.
  • For the time being, card payments only and also ensure staff and customers are able to adhere to social distancing.

Ash added:

"Falmouth as a whole has been really positive during this whole pandemic.

"The town manager has been in near-constant contact with all us business owners and the High Street as a community has been incredibly supportive.

"I really hope this continues as we all begin to reopen in these uncertain times."
