In a new regular feature, Mayor Steve Eva and Deputy Cllr Kirstie Edwards provide an update on the things going on at the Town Council.

Both mayors will be addressing the community weekly writing about what they have been up to, their committees/meetings, and any issues/news affecting residents in the town.

This is what the pair had to say about the events over the past week and going forward...

I'll be honest with you, this role is much busier and more diverse than I ever imagined possible. It has been a lot to learn very quickly, the way things work, who is responsible for what, and just how much we as a council are responsible for (not as much as people think).

It has also been a baptism of fire in how people perceive me as a person and have opinions about the things I say and do, I don't know what can prepare you for that. That does work both ways, with strangers saying a range of things.

One thing I have always maintained is that we should be kind always, that speaks to much of the background work I have been doing lately on supporting vulnerable or marginalised members of our community.

I feel very strongly that those of us with a public profile have a moral responsibility to lead from the front by ensuring every member of our community is seen, heard, and feels safe.

To that end, I have been writing my first council motion, more on that if it passes next week.

I have also been working on accessibility for disabled residents like myself and we now have two brand spanking new radar key 24-hour toilets in the town, one on the maritime car park and one at Swanpool Beach.

Now I know that this is not nearly enough for our IBD and other disabled community, but we had to start somewhere, as per usual, huge thanks must go to the grounds teams and Simon, for listening and acting.

As a council we want to see this as a first step to build on our disability provision for Falmouth, many of my colleagues had this at the top of their 'want to do for Falmouth' list.

I also chaired my first cultural services meeting and had many meetings covering this element of my new role, both with community projects such as Streetview24 2021 and with governance such as place-shaping.

How do we want our town to look in years to come? A museum for Falmouth? Street art Murals? Historical stories told around the town? I'd love to hear from you!

Another week has passed with so much work going on behind the scenes.

Simon Penna has been putting together a bid for a Lottery Grant to move forward with the long-awaited skateboard park, hopefully we will be successful in this so fingers crossed.

The Town Team have been work extremely hard to deliver Falmouth Week along with Tim from South West Bars and although we now know the lineup and set up will be much different this year, we can all look forward to live entertainment at the Church Street Car Park this August and of course the Red Arrows.

Princess Pavilion is being used by lots of people and the feedback is exceptional and the facility and gardens are very colourful especially with the sunny weather.

On Thursday the Town Clerk and I took time out to sit on the Pier and talked about the Council, Town, and how the staff were coping with the covid situation.

Friday I was absolutely delighted to see a queue of mainly our younger generation waiting to have their jab when talking to them the same answer kept coming, which was they could not get to Stithians and was so happy to have a mobile vaccination station on the Moor.

Several people waiting or their jab were working in town and their bosses gave them time to grab a jab.

The staff running the vaccination station were great and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them all for their efforts.

I for one am happy to see the temperature drop especially at night, school holidays have kicked in and the number of visitors are rising.

So please stay safe and like me, keep the mask on when entering shops and buildings.
