Councillor Steve Eva said that roadworks need to be better organised or accidents could occur.

The number of roadworks taking place in and around Falmouth lately could result in accidents, councillors believe.

Brought up in a Falmouth Town Council meeting this week, Councillor Eva called for companies "to get on with the work" and that it should be a swifter operation.

He also fears the delays in completing roadworks could result in somebody getting seriously injured.

Roadworks are currently happening between Avenue Road and Bar Road, the Penryn Bypass is coned off, Cliff Road, Arwenack Avenue, Castle Drive, among various others.

"If they are going to shut the road off, put lights in, then it should be like a 24-hour window to get the road done and get it clear," he said.

Councillor Eva continued:

"The gasworks company and the water company seem to dig a hole in the ground, put cones there and just leave it.

"I think we should be asking Cornwall Council to cut down the amount of work that happens on the roads.

"It is absolutely ridiculous. We should be asking for it to be organised better than it is.

"If you come down the Penryn Bypass they put cones there about 3/4 weeks ago and every so often you see a van parked there but there is no work. If they are trying to turn it into a single lane just be honest about it.

"You go down to Avenue Road or Kimberley Park Road and you get people jumping the lights. They can see the other end but they can't see the people coming out. Someone is going to get seriously hurt."

Councillor Saunby commented:

"On the Penryn Bypass, I think there are cones there because we had an accident that damaged the bridge. How long has it been like that? I don't think they've even attended to repair it. They shut the inside lane a week before Christmas and it is still the same now."

Councillor Eva added:

"They've coned off the bypass but forced the traffic into the oncoming traffic. If they want to make it safe shut the middle lane off and let people down the inside lane. To cone off the inside lane and force traffic into the middle in the wet, icy weather is just an accident waiting to happen."
