Councillors raised their concerns last night as plans were presented to redevelop the site of Boslowick Inn.
At a meeting of the Falmouth Town Council planning committee last night (8th), councillors objected to the application in its current form after concerns over vehicle access into the development, and the loss of a heritage asset.
The building has a rich history dating back to 1301, becoming a public house in the mid-1960s.
The Boslowick Inn closed its doors last month after struggles like many public houses in recent years, not helped by covid.
Councillor Steve Eva said:
"We all know something has got to happen to the site. I don't like that access, you have got to bring that access in from that corner because that bend is one of the worst I've ever seen, especially when it's icy.
"If you were to go ahead with it, I would like to see a condition put in of no Airbnb, no second homes. If you are going to build houses and you are going to knock down a lovely old building, there has got to be housing for local people."
When asked if the committee was happy with the residential development, Councillor Clegg responded, "I don't want the building demolished, I think it will be an enormous loss of biodiversity, and there is so much character in it."
Councillor Young added:
"While the traditional use of the pub may not be viable, it is the sort of site that something could be done with."
Councillor Spargo commented saying it would be a "massive shame" to lose the building and highlighted the positive impact it has on the area.
The planning committee recommended refusal because they wanted to see the heritage asset retained, and they didn't agree with the layout/access.
