Last week, Falmouth welcomed a new cider shop to the town on Discovery Quay as The Bearded Brewery moved into its new premises.

The Bearded Brewery is an independent award-winning Cider producer based in Newquay and has now expanded taking over where The Bottle Bank used to operate.

Run by Robby and Sparky, they have gone from strength to strength at their other site in St Mawgan, speaking on the decision to move to Falmouth they said:

"There isn't a better place to be, Falmouth is where it is at."

The pair had been looking for a while for a place to set up shop in Falmouth, looking at a premises near The Chainlocker first of all and when the opportunity presented itself to move onto Discovery Quay they jumped at the chance.

The place has been set up to give it an old school pub feel with a biker twist, even the bar snacks are weighed on a set of brass scales.

Coronavirus has presented challenges, but they are determined to keep everyone safe, make it inviting for people to sit down and have a drink, "we want everyone to be safe, we have got everything in place to make that happen we just have to police it keep going with it and not make everyone feel so uncomfortable."

They have just been granted permission for benches across the front of premises, "in the summer you can come and have a cider and just enjoy where you are."

You are also able to bring your own food into the bar. They continued:

"We have just come to an agreement with Amanzi to get their biltong so we can have that on the bar as well. We are really trying to balance it out, so we are not just here to take everything we do want to give back.

"Our ethos is to create a vibe that it is two mates who like a drink and like hanging out together, I think this place (Falmouth) seems to have got that vibe.

"The biggest thing that we want is for people to come in and for it to feel like an old-fashioned pub.

"That is the key to having a business like this, you have to keep it simple."

The Bearded Brewery also sells spirits, calling themselves a cider and spirit producer, boasting more cider products than anybody else in Cornwall even though they are the smallest producer in the county.

Revealing the secret to their success they added:

"It is just hard work, we have got something in life that we love doing and we want to share that and we want people to enjoy it as well, that is why we put the effort in and that is why we are here and that is why we came to Falmouth.

"If you want something that is strong dry and old school, middle of the road or sweet, we have got it.

"The mango cider holds the gold award in the south-west because we use real fruit in our cider you can genuinely taste it.

"We use lots of different methods right from beer brewing and for our candy floss cider we use cake making products, so we are very much a craft brewery and we will make it out of anything. We also stock 16 local ales as well, all from about two miles down the road."

Sitting in the bar, kicking back to AC/DC and enjoying a taster of what the guys have got to offer (recommend the mango cider) this place and the guys behind it are the real deal, plenty of products to offer if you are not a fan of cider but they might just change your mind.
